Valery KOSHLYAKOV
Iconus
Cardboard
80 x 34 x 27 cm
The effacement of objects and the metamorphosis of contexts are the core of Koshlyakov’s creative process. He develops signs and images drawn from the world’s collective cultural memory, transforming that memory into raw materials, the source and raison d’être of his creative acts. The artist plays with iconic subjects, from Stalinist buildings to gothic cathedrals by way of Greek statues, like so many fantasies burst forth from a mad mind. Here, Iconus is an invented word, a mix of the strong symbolism of orthodox icons and the cultural vacuum of our world today. It emerges from the reality of our everyday environment.
