The artist works on the depiction of waste, tired objects that no longer have any use, and simple utilitarian containers. By choosing insignificant – even damaged – things, the painter draws the viewer’s eye to his signature, his touch, his treatment of colour and light. The raw material presented in his art enables its dematerialization: it is no longer the stack of used cardboard that matters, but rather the iconic emergence of the objet d’art that the artist seeks to attain. Arthur Djoroukhian does not just want to portray or stage the object; instead, he aims for an affirmation in the style of the New Realists: the real object asserts itself as such, with its evocative, polemical power.
