Antoni Tàpies was a painter, sculptor, essayist and theorist of Spanish art with a focus on Catalan expression. After taking drawing classes at the Valls Academy, he devoted himself to painting and abstract art. Beginning in the mid-1950s, his reputation became international. He took a number of international awards and participated in the 1952 Venice Biennale.
