Mark Dion is interested in the relationship Man has towards Nature through knowledge and scientific discourse. ln his installations, almost similar to curio cabinets, the artist uses classification codes (methods, features, vocabulary) to better question the world around us.
“Water Fawl/ Water Foul is a still life. I have been using tar for many years as a material that suppresses life and nature. This material means absence of life as it keeps the shape of objects but wipes vitality out of them. As an artist worried about nature, it is my responsibility to ponder over its state. Unfortunately, only few positive news has come from the front. Most of my work is an expression of melancholy and mourning.”
